#6 - Commanding Me

Commanding Me was one of the earlier written songs for the album. The initial idea came with chords, melody and words for the first verse, and the first line of the chorus. However, it took me a long time to work out the two chords to link the verse and chorus together. Even as we tracked it at Roundhead Studios I remember asking Eddie (Rayner) if the sections felt randomly just ‘stuck together’, and whether it flowed well or not.
A quirky piece of trainspotting is that the bridge and outro sections were tracked two BPM faster than the rest of the song. Every time we got to those sections it felt like it suddenly dragged, and when Pat Kuhtze is drumming you know it’s not him, so it was decided that the click would subtly speed up for those sections. The strange first chords on the acoustic at the start were the result of me mistakenly playing the chord at the wrong fret, and the sliding it down when I realised...
The second verse came about after a gig I had done at a venue in Hamilton. There was a staircase that you had to cart all the equipment up, and you could always hear the hum of the crowd through the walls. One particular night there was an obvious kind of date going on between a very glamorous young women, and very tall, well groomed man, right in front of the stage. The sort of radiant couple that many people in the audience seemed to be sort of drawn to watching.

Lyrics

She came from the ocean
Covered in light
Like a vision is conjured
In another man’s eyes
I was hoping to see her
But she passed me by
And something didn’t feel right

Hey, when I’m in your grasp
You’re commanding me
When I’m in your room of selfless possession

He’s the man of the hour
Seven feet tall
With hands for a women
He could have them all
Her touch as he listens
Through the crowded room
Through the walls and the staircase

Hey, when I’m in your grasp
You’re commanding me
When I’m in your room of selfless possession
