Trees Stand Strong was an important song early on, and had a large influence on the mood and direction the album went in. Certainly in terms of production and the overall atmosphere I was attempting to create. As I mentioned in the previous blog for Temptation, I felt that Trees Stand Strong was like part two of Temptation. It’s quite a dark song, but I feel there is a bit of relief in there too, although it might be hard to hear it.
The image for the title came, again, from a childhood memory. There was a long line of massive old gum trees down one side of a road we lived off, about twenty minutes out of Hamilton, NZ. I remember as a child always wondering if one would fall, but none of them ever did.
Trees Stand Strong has special memories for a couple of reasons. It was the first song we tracked at Roundhead, with Patrick Kuhtze and myself recording it live. Sitting in the studio of a childhood hero, surrounded by all these instruments I’d heard and seen being played growing up, was a special thing. It was also the first song we showed Eddie (Rayner) when he came in. Pat really liked this song, and it was the initial suggestion of what we should show Ed when he arrived. I remember, vividly, him turning to me mid-way through and saying he thought it was a good song, and I had a great voice… surreal.
It was also his idea to use the harmonium on it.
Thanks Ed.

Lyrics

Her life before her eyes
She goes on like an endless shore
It takes nothing different from the one she had
Something is different from the one she left

Inside she calls
Through the woodwork
Brave face on
And she knows she is alone

Cold night, the moon is full
I starred across the room
It took something from her, a strange intent
All her desires, in the life she lived

Inside she calls
Through the woodwork
Brave face on
In the distance
The trees stand strong
And she knows she is alone

Through the walls, in the silence he waits
Like a being that repents from his ways
Through the floor, hear his name from the ground
Through the walls, in the silence he waits
