Private Eye came about in a very unusual way. The title and verse guitar part were written probably about 7 years before I released the album, and had a different melody which I was never really happy with. Years after, I wrote the chorus part and thought they worked well together, but I just never found the melody and words to finish it.

I decided during the initial album sessions that I wanted to finish this song, and once again found myself making up the drum part to a yet un-written bridge section during the tracking. Fortunately it worked out well. The song was 80% through the recording process before I wrote the melody and lyric, and was one of the two last songs finished for the album. It is the story about a deeply religious officer of the law, on a case. He was just a character in my head that appeared with the song title.

"his conscience clear, the law on his side, trust in instinct, private eye".

It features a great cameo on the harmonica from my good friend Brett Wilson which is another favourite part of the album! Interestingly, I almost cut the guitar solo which appears in the outro. I tracked it quite quickly and spontaneously one afternoon, but when I listened back later in the session I wasn’t sure it fit very well. My good friend and co-producer Regan McKinnon arrived while I was listening back and talked me in to leaving it in there because it was ‘Queen-esque’.

Lyrics

The private eye is on his way
Through the temple of nowhere
Confession written on his face
Found the lord in the crowded room
As he fell from the heavens

They will come whenever he asked
Their words in whispers will come at last
His conscience clear the law on his side
Trust in instinct private eye

The vision came through the ceiling
There was no hesitation
The devil riding on his back
Found the prints in the alley way
And he spoke of forgiveness

They will come whenever he asks
Their words in whispers will come at last
His conscience clear the law on his side
He’s the private eye

They will come whenever he asked
Their words in whispers will come at last
His conscience clear the law on his side
He’s the private eye
