Nothing I Can Do was originally called ‘In my Room’, and although the melody and chords were there, the lyric was lacking so I put it on the proverbial shelf, knowing I could come back to it. It ended up being about a sort of minor, meaningless friction in a relationship. One of those arguments where you forget what it was even about, but you’ve made up your mind to be difficult and just take things the wrong way. When your head’s disappeared up your own arse a bit. There are parts from the innocent and guilty side’s of it.
This song was where the idea to try and get Eddie (Rayner) involved came from. It has a wonderful swing, and tempo, and I knew it needed a great instrumental solo. The song's swing and playfulness is reminiscent of early Crowded House, especially the live performances when Eddie was in the touring band. So I talked to Patrick Kuhtze, who played drums on the album and knows Ed, and the connection was made. I remember the surreal moment when I first heard the wonderful hammond solo he did. It was a very special moment. Thank you Ed!

Lyrics

There’s strange tension in this room
Pointed words fall through the roof
Shadows creep outside
I see them looking in at me
Beneath the clear moonlight
I crossed a line I could not see

When you call my name
I can’t be free
When you hole up in the room
There’s nothing I can do.

The silence caught us unaware
And the children are in bed
We’re going round in circles
With no chance that I will win
I made my own decision
Misunderstanding what you said

Call my name
I can’t be free
When you hole up in the room
There’s nothing I can do

The empty space in between us
I caught a glimpse of isolation
There’s nothing I can say
To help the situation
I was not born yesterday
I keep my own suspicions
Sleeping on the couch
